2025 League Competition 2
Cupar Camera Club were honoured to have Roy Robertson, from Newport on Tay, as the judge for the second competition of the season at the meeting on 20th November. Roy is a past President of the Royal Photographic Society (2011-13) and was the first Scot since 1897.
Roy had a mammoth task with over 80 digital and print images entered into the competition. The competition was split into two leagues. One for novice photographers who have recently joined the club, the other for the ‘more established members’. Each league is then split further into three separate sections, Digital Images, Open Prints and Monochrome Prints.
Roy gave a critique of every image entered. It is helpful for members to learn from a judges comments, not just on their phto but on the others as well. Roy was keen to point out the good points in the entries. With the prints he said the ‘big’ was not always ‘best’ and was pleased that some members had not printed their photos at A3 but instead opted for a smaller size. He said that some of the images would be stronger if those elements that ‘didn’t add to the main idea of the photograph were cropped out. For the Digital images he warned against being too heavy with the post processing that could introduce artefacts. With the Monochrome photographs Roy advocated ‘Dodging and Burning’ (Dodging and burning are darkroom or digital editing techniques to selectively lighten or darken areas of a photograph). This brings out detail in the photo and provides a better balance of the tonal range.
Roy awarded First, Second and Third places were given in each sections of both leagues were together with giving Highly Commended and Commended awards.
